Best known to European archaeologists as the Director of the Ferryland Archaeology Project, a major and long-running investigation of this key early historical site in the history of Canada, with its impressive 17th-century buildings and rich material culture. The project has attracted great interest in the UK, Portugal, the Basque Country and France, as well as North America. He is much involved in public archaeology, & was awarded Memorial University’s President’s Award for Public Engagement Partnerships in 2017. Alongside contributions to collected essays, Prof. Gaulton’s publications include papers in the Journal of Early American History, the Material History Review, the International Journal of Historical Archaeology, Northeast Historical Archaeology, Newfoundland and Labrador Studies and the Journal of Archaeological Method & Theory; their subjects range from artefact studies, transhumance, the early Atlantic fisheries and aspects of the Ferryland project.
