Grounds for election

Ruth Shaffrey has been a specialist in worked stone for 20 years, with a particular emphasis on quernstones and millstones. She has a considerable body of over 80 published reports on archaeological stone and has contributed to many archaeological site narratives. Her research articles and books include considerations of early Neolithic stone tools from the southern Levant, Iron Age loomweights, Iron Age and Roman querns, millstones, and whetstones. Ruth recently conceived and edited Written in Stone: Papers on the function, form, and provenancing of prehistoric stone objects in memory of Fiona Roe. She is currently researching the querns and millstones of Silchester, funded by the Haverfield Bequest and the Roman Research Trust.
