George Carter has been a member of the Gentlemen's Society of Spalding since 2015 and was a founder member of Norfolk Gardens Trust. He writes on garden design and garden history, specialising in formal gardens of the 17th and 18thC. His 1987 Gunton Park, a Historical Survey was commissioned by Norfolk County Council. As a garden designer he has worked on historic gardens such as Chevening, 2009-2017 and the Royal Hospital, Chelsea; he wrote a history of the grounds and a masterplan for the gardens 2012-15; and is a consultant on the gardens of Holkham and Penshurst. His publications are mainly concerned with historic gardens in England and the work of Humphry Repton. He co-edited Humphry Repton's 'Memoirs' 2005; and co-authored Humphry Repton, Landscape Gardener 1752-1818, Sainsbury Centre, 2005. He contributed several entries to the Oxford Companion to Architecture, 2005 and the Oxford Companion to Gardens, 1988. He has designed many Royal Collection and Sainsbury Centre exhibitions.
