Grounds for election

Professor Hawley's research covers interdisciplinary topics in the literature and the culture of the long 18th century (1660-1830). Current projects are research on the satirical group 'The Scriblerus Club'. Another is Private Theatricals and Amateur Performance, working with a network of scholars. She stages reconstruction performances in historical houses. Radio includes 'In Our Time' and 'Voices from the Old Bailey'. Dr Hawley is a Trustee of Pope's Grotto Trust. Now on the Editorial Board of Journal of 18th-Century Studies, she was General Editor of Literature and Science, 1660-1832, 8 vols, 2002-3; edited Elizabeth Carter, Selected Works, vol. 2 of Bluestocking Feminism: Writings of the Bluestocking Circle, 1738-1790. Recent papers include ‘Dibdin and the Pic Nics’, in Charles Dibdin and Late Georgian Culture, 2018; 'Taste and Toasts in Early 18th-Century Club Culture’, in Taste in the 18th Century, 2011; ‘Tristram Shandy, The Cambridge Companion to Laurence Sterne, 2009
