Charles has made a major contribution to British architectural history in over twenty years with the Pevsner Architectural Guides, initially as a research assistant at Penguin Books, and latterly as Joint Editor of the series at Yale University Press. His own publications in that time include 'London 5: East' (2005, with Bridget Cherry), the revised 'Bedfordshire and Huntingdonshire' (2014), 'Hampshire: South' (2018, with Bruce Bailey), and 'Houses' in the 'Pevsner Introductions' series (2016), as well as contributions to other 'Buildings of England' volumes. He has also edited over twenty other books in the various Pevsner series, including all the 'Buildings of Scotland' editions published since 2002. He has served on committees for the Victoria County Histories, for English Heritage, and for Historic England, of which he is currently a Commissioner.
