Grounds for election

Esther has been working to transform community archaeology in the Shetland Islands to create a sustainable model of academically credible work carried out by the community. She has started Archaeology Shetland to create an environment where local people feel empowered to contribute directly to the archaeological record. The group contribute multiple new sites annually through survey, coastal monitoring and excavation. Alongside ArchShet, she has enabled continued development in local volunteers through her thriving adult education programme with the local authority. Recently Esther’s community work was recognised with awards from the University of the Highlands and Islands and the Shetland Heritage Association. In October 2017 this was also recognised in a motion tabled in the Scottish parliament. She is currently taking her work further as co-director of an innovative community interest company designed to reconnect Shetland with its intangible cultural maritime heritage.
