Grounds for election

Prof. Ted Banning has an international reputation for research on early agricultural societies in the Near East, while also introducing and developing novel theory and methods. His fieldwork has concentrated in Jordan, where he has investigated archaeological landscapes since 1979. He has focused mainly on the Neolithic period, with contributions on Neolithic and Chalcolithic architecture and what it can tell us about social change. In 1981, he initiated research in Jordan at Wadi Ziqlab. His later surveys in northern Jordan evolved to include predictive modeling, geoarchaeology, subsurface testing of stream terraces, and Bayesian optimal search methods. Banning’s book, The Archaeologist’s Laboratory (2000) is widely used to train archaeologists in the analysis, interpretation and publication of artifacts, plant and animal remains, stratigraphy, soils, and radiocarbon dates
