Grounds for election

Thomas Tuohy is a leading authority on fifteenth-century Ferrara. His book Herculean Ferrara: Ercole d'Este (1471–1505) and the Invention of a Ducal Capital (Cambridge 1996; pb 2002) was an inspired interpretation of his exhaustive and meticulous research in Italian archives, beginning with three years in the Archivio Estense 1975–8 and then developed over some twenty years, when his work was supported by, for example, the British Academy, the Italian government and a Harvard University Fellowship at I Tatti. Dr Tuohy has published extensively on Renaissance Italy, on the history of art collecting in Britain, and on the architecture of colonial India. His book A Taste for Pictures. The Formation and Dispersal of British Private Collections, 1630-1930, is in the press. Future plans include continued research on families and houses in West Cumberland and a book on Islamic cities
