Dr Derek Craig completed an undergraduate degree in Archaeology at UCL in 1982 and a PhD at Durham University in 1992 on pre-Norman sculpture in south-west Scotland. He became a research assistant to Professor Rosemary Cramp in 1991, supporting her work at Wearmouth and The Hirsel and contributing as series editor to the Corpus of Anglo-Saxon Stone Sculpture. He remains as a fulltime post-doctoral researcher on this project and his exceptional knowledge and expertise in sculpture has been instrumental to the completion of ten volumes so far (IV-XIII). He remains the series editor and is co-authoring volume XVI on the Anglo-Saxon sculpture of Norfolk and Suffolk with Professor Sarah Semple which will complete the project and the series. Dr Craig has also published independently on his own research notably on the carved stones at Hoddom (2006), the sculptured stones and early Christian inscriptions at Whithorn and St Ninian (1997), and the pre-Norman sculpture of Galloway (1991).
