Grounds for election

J. Cameron Monroe is an internationally recognized historical archaeologist. His research stands at the intersections between histories of the trans-Atlantic slave trade, anthropologies of space and landscape, and archaeologies of the state. His approach is best represented by his Cambridge University Press monographs, Power and Landscape in Atlantic West Africa (2012, with Ogundiran), and The Precolonial State in West Africa (2014). Recently, he has initiated research on the materiality of sovereignty in the Kingdom of Hayti in the years following the Haitian Revolution. He has published in a wide range of internationally recognized journals, including the Journal of African History, Journal of Social Archaeology, Journal of Archaeological Research, Annual Reviews in Anthropology, Journal of African Archaeology, and Current Anthropology. In 2014 he was Benjamin Meaker Fellow at the University of Bristol, and is currently an Associate Professor of Anthropology at UC Santa Cruz.
