Dan Stewart is a historian and archaeologist of ancient Greece. His teaching and research examine the Greek, Hellenistic, and Roman periods and combine archaeology, landscape, and text. He has published 'Reading the Landscapes of the Rural Peloponnese' (Oxford, 2013); important papers on the Roman landscapes; and several studies of the use of Pausanias in Greek archaeology. He was field director at the Sikyon Project and currently co-directs the British School at Athens’ project on Roman Knossos. His account of late Classical and early Hellenistic Spartan history (in Powell’s 'Companion to Sparta', 2018), represents an important rethink of Sparta after its glory days. Dan has had a substantial impact as the first outreach officer of the Society for the Promotion of Hellenic Studies, and plays an active part in shaping the policy of the BSA through various committees. He is Lecturer in Ancient History at the University of Leicester, where he has received teaching excellence awards.
