Grounds for election

Thomas Hufschmid is a leading scholar in the study of the Roman theatre and amphitheatre, working in Switzerland. From 1993-2007 he was Archaeological Director for the restoration of the Roman theatre at Augst (Augusta Raurica), and for all aspects of the restoration from 2000. After 2008 he ran follow up projects funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation. His 2009 three volume study of the Roman amphitheatre ‘Amphitheatrum in Provincia et Italia. Architektur und Nutzung römischer Amphitheater von Augusta Raurica bis Puteoli’’, has been widely acclaimed as a major work of scholarship, and is the essential work of reference on the subject for this generation. His monograph publications include works on Roman housing, domestic architecture and wall painting in Roman Augst. His definitive work on the Roman theatre of Augst and its restoration is in preparation. He has also written many multilingual papers in journals and edited volumes.
