Grounds for election

John Renner is an art historian specialising in Italian painting, sculpture and stained glass of the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries, with a focus on the mendicant orders. He currently teaches as Associate Lecturer at the Courtauld Institute, where he took his PhD in 2016 with a thesis on early images of St Francis of Assisi. His article entitled ‘Dating the Windows by the Maestro di S. Francesco at Assisi’, published in the Burlington Magazine in 2018, proposed a redating of the first programme of figural stained glass by an Italian workshop, with significant consequences for our understanding of the career of the anonymous Master responsible. Other publications are in press. He has presented his research at many academic symposia in the UK and overseas, most recently at the Society of Antiquaries conference ‘Secret Spaces'. As well as teaching at the Courtauld he also lectures at the V&A, the London Art History Society and at other educational and cultural institutions.
