Grounds for election
Francis O’Gorman is a literary critic and textual editor, mainly of English and Irish literature between 1780 and 1920. He taught at the University of Leeds for 16 years, where he was Head of the School of English for 4 of them. He became Saintsbury Professor of English Literature at the University of Edinburgh in 2016, and is Fellow of the Royal Historical Society and the English Association. He is the author or editor of 23 books, including 6 on or by John Ruskin. His edition of Swinburne’s poetry, criticism, and prose was published by OUP in 2016. He has edited four Trollope novels and individual texts by Elizabeth Gaskell, Ruskin, and Wilkie Collins for Oxford World’s Classics. He has given Mikimoto Memorial Lecture (University of Lancaster) and the George Jack Memorial Lecture (University of St Andrews). He is chairman of the Ruskin Society and a trustee of the Priory of the Holy Trinity, York.
