Grounds for election

Prof Snellman has been Professor of Ethnology at the University of Helsinki since 2012. She joined the University’s senior leadership in 2018, as the Vice-Rector for internationalization. Her academic research has mainly dealt with contemporary and historic migration within and from the Arctic (among her c.100 academic publications, monographs on Lumberjacks in Finnish Lapland, migration from Finnish Lapland to Southern Sweden, and migration history of Finnish Lapland and co-edited books on e.g. Sámi people and random Finnishness). Her latest research dealt with where people who have migrated wish to be buried, and historical Finnish-American cookbooks. Throughout her career she has worked to make various shared voices heard, and emphasized the importance of communicating research to the people it concerns. She has received research funding in Finland, the Nordics and Canada, and led several research projects. She currently supervises five PhDs and has supervised nine completed PhDs.
