Grounds for election

After a degree in aeronautical engineering and a career in systems analysis, John Poulter studied the surveying of Roman roads and frontier works in Britain. His most important contribution is an explanation of the principles underlying the planning of Hadrian’s Wall and the Antonine Wall. His theories, primarily based on fieldwork but also involving systems analysis, have far-reaching implications for our understanding of how the two Walls functioned and have gained wide acceptance by scholars of the Roman limes. He has published articles on this subject in Britannia, Archaeologia Aeliana and other journals and is the author of two British Archaeological Reports and a popular book which summarises his findings. His research also embraces the surveying of canals and railways, on which he has also published. He is also a City Liveryman and the Honorary Archivist of the Worshipful Company of Information Technologists.
