Grounds for election
Chris Clarkson is an archaeologist specialising in Australian archaeology, stone tools, and the dispersal of modern humans out of Africa. He has published over 100 articles and two books (3690 citations), with a third forthcoming with CUP. His key research includes discovery of the first occupation of Australia 65 ka (Nature 2017), including evidence for the oldest edge ground axes, first use of reflective paint, and the oldest seed-grinding known outside of Africa. His work in SE Asia with O’Connor (Science 2012) demonstrated the earliest global evidence for pelagic fishing in association with Middle Stone Age technology. His work in India with Petraglia demonstrated continuous human occupation of India before and after the Toba super-eruption 74,000 years ago (Science 2007, Nature Communications 2020). Clarkson has held prestigious fellowships with the Australian Research Council and the University of Cambridge. He has ongoing projects in Australia, South and SE Asia, and Africa.
