Frances is one of the most distinguished textile historians working in Great Britain today, with a wide-ranging knowledge and a string of publications that testify to the depth of her research. After reading law at London university, she switched to the field of Archaeology in 1977, and worked at the Museum of London, Department of Urban Archaeology (afterwards MoLAS) until moving to the Whitworth Art Gallery, The University of Manchester in 1993, where she is Curator of Textiles. Her publications include finds from late Saxon London, Viking Age Dublin, late 9th-century Wales (Llangors) , medieval London and Byzantine and early Islamic Egypt.
