Grounds for election

Sir David served at the British Embassy in Ankara between 1965 and 1969 and was Ambassador there from 1997 to 2001. For the majority of his career he specialised in east-west relations and in defence policy. He served in Moscow and Washington and at the UN, and was Assistant Under Secretary of State for Central and Eastern European Affairs, and for Defence Policy. He was an Academic Visitor at St Anthony's College, Oxford and since retirement from the FCO, Director of a Security Policy Centre at Birmingham University and an Honorary Professor there; he was also a Senior Fellow of the Institute for Strategic Dialogue. He was for eleven years Chair of the British Institute (of Archaeology) at Ankara, where he is now a Vice-President.
