Candidate Details

Candidate Name

Anthony Graham Howe

Academic degrees, honours etc.

MA (Oxon) [Music], BA (Oxon) [Theology]

Profession or occupation

Royal Chaplain, and Chaplain-elect to the Order of the Companions of Honour

Grounds for election

Fr Howe's clerical duties, first parochial and now palatial, have left him little time so far for published work, but he is a distinguished bibliophile with a specialisation in liturgical works, notably specimens from the history of the Book of Common Prayer. Appropriately for a royal chaplain, he has recently discovered and acquired a unique surviving copy of the BCP, 1594, from the Elizabethan Chapel Royal, in its original binding and with significant annotations. In addition, he is a keen musician (his first of two Oxford undergraduate degrees was in music) and has fostered a vibrant choir at the Chapel Royal at Hampton Court, taking full cognizance of the royal choral tradition there. He was responsible for the choir's reconstruction of a Chapel Royal service in Lucy Worsley's well-received documentary on the history of evensong.
