Grounds for election

Cynthia Johnston's contributions to antiquarian research lie mainly in thirteenth-century Western European manuscripts and the history of collecting, with significant publications in both areas. In 2013 she established an academic partnership between Blackburn Museum and the Institute of English Studies which has led to events both in London and the Midlands, notably three exhibitions: 2013 'Blackburn's Worthy Citizen' at Senate House Library; 2015 'Cotton to Gold' at 2 Temple Place London, show-casing collections of various media (e.g. eleven Turners, fifty rare books) from museums in Burnley, Accrington and Blackburn; 2020 'Holding the Vision' at Blackburn Museum funded by Paul Mellon/SoA (rare books from Blackburn, Preston and Burnley). She authored catalogues for the 2013 and 2015 exhibitions and more recently co-edited Collecting the Past: Collecting and Collections in Britain (Routledge, 2019). Her work is significantly enhancing the visibility of collections in the North West.
