Jonathan started his professional life as an engineer at Rolls Royce but made the transition to his real passion, archaeology, in his early twenties. He has since had a career which has included over 30 years of archaeological fieldwork and research, working for various archaeology and heritage organisations. Since its inception in 1999, he has directed the Historic Buildings Section of FAS Heritage. His project and research work has focused on medieval and post-medieval buildings in the UK, as reflected in his published papers, with a particular interest in the development of castles in the British Isles. He has just co-authored a forthcoming book on Lincoln Castle and a paper which re-examines the medieval development and form of Clifford’s Tower, York. He is currently the consultant cathedral archaeologist for Lincoln and Ripon Cathedrals and, at the former, has initiated new studies of the fabric on both the Cathedral and the buildings of the close.
