Grounds for election
Kay has been based in Rome for his professional archaeological career. He is currently the Archaeological Officer at the British School at Rome where he directs both excavations and archaeological geophysical surveys. His excavations include the Roman town at Segni and at the Porta Nola in Pompeii. Cumulatively, his geophysical survey work has transformed the use of non-invasive survey techniques in Italian archaeology and produced an invaluable body of work particularly with regard understanding the urbanscapes of Roman towns. He has been involved with The Portus Project, The Roman Towns Project and The Tiber valley Project. He is on the scientific committee of CNR in Rome. He is also a visiting fellow at the Universities of Southampton and Newcastle. Stephen has published extensively on both his excavations and his geophysical surveys. He is a regular contributor to the Papers of the British School at Rome and to the journal Lazio e Sabina, providing field reports for both.
