Grounds for election

Dr Smith specialises in the management of cultural heritage places and the World Heritage program. Her research has directly contributed to four successful World Heritage nominations in the Pacific Islands and, most recently in Australia, the nomination for Budj Bim Cultural Landscape which was inscribed on the World Heritage List in 2019. Dr Smith has more than fifty scientific publications. Her work has strong policy influence. Her standing is recognised in her ministerial appointment to the Australian delegation to the UNESCO World Heritage Committee (2018 – 2021). In this capacity she provides independent advice to the Australian Government on World Heritage matters and represents Australia at annual UNESCO World Heritage Committee meetings. She has been an advisor to UNESCO’s Pacific World Heritage program since its inception in 2004, engaging with communities to build their own capacity to develop and implement long-term, sustainable heritage outcomes.
