Grounds for election
Eleanor Rosamund Barraclough is a historian and broadcaster specialising in the medieval Nordic world. She read Anglo-Saxon, Norse and Celtic at Cambridge, where she did her PhD in landscape, identity and cultural memory in the Sagas of Icelanders. Now an Associate Professor in the History Department at Durham, she previously held a Leverhulme Early Career Fellowship at Oxford, where she was also a Junior Research Fellow at The Queen’s College. She has been a visiting research scholar at the Universities of Bergen, Oslo and Wisconsin-Madison. Her publications broadly range across landscape, memory, textual and material culture, including the monograph Beyond the Northlands: Viking Voyages and the Old Norse Sagas (OUP, 2016). She holds an AHRC Leadership Fellowship on forests in the Germanic cultures of northern Europe, and is General Editor of the Brepols series ‘Borders, Boundaries, Landscapes’. As a regular BBC broadcaster, Dr Barraclough is a prominent advocate of medieval history.
