Grounds for election

A retired toxicologist, Steen has lectured, written and published extensively on heraldry and genealogy, focusing on comparative aspects and practices across Europe during the Middle Ages. His doctoral thesis, Editing Armorials (published 2017), is the first scholarly attempt to establish pedigrees and interrelations for multiple groups of rolls of arms across Europe. Besides editing several medieval rolls of arms, he has made c.100,000 coats of arms and many crests available as an online ordinary with references to their occurrence and ownership. His work on armorial and genealogical links includes papers on the Beauchamps of Warwick, cross-Channel and continental families, armorial pedigrees on tombstones, the place of banners in early heraldry, types and variations used in attributing arms to fictive persons and countries, and a revised bibliography of writings on Danish heraldry. He has also served as board member, secretary and auditor of the Scandinavian Heraldry Society.
