Grounds for election

Sir John's extensive writings on English legal history include editions of Early Modern texts in law French and Latin; a manual of law French; and several catalogues of medieval and later legal manuscripts, including Cambridge University Library, American libraries, and the dispersed Phillipps collection. His two-volume biographical dictionary The Men of Court 1440-1550 makes extensive use of manuscript material, funeral monuments, and armorial pedigrees. Among his more archaeological pieces are articles on the history of legal costume, serjeants’ rings, Tudor pedigree rolls, medieval lawyers' funerary monuments and medieval heraldic pendants.
