Chris has long been dedicated to historical and antiquarian scholarship. After completing his studies at Oxford, he was an external advisor for the University's theology degree. He is the author of seven books on modern English history: : Possible Dreams: A Personal History of the British Christian Socialists (1996); Stafford Cripps: The First Modern Chancellor (1997); Glenda Jackson: The Biography (1999); Parliament: The Biography: vol. 1, Ancestral Voices (2014); Parliament: The Biography: vol. 2, Reform (2014); Entitled: A Critical History of the British Aristocracy (2017); and The Glamour Boys: The Secret Story of the Rebels who Fought for Britain to Defeat Hitler (2020). Chris also took an active interest in the recent St Stephen's Chapel project at the Palace of Westminster. A dedicated public servant, talented historian and advocate for rigorous, popular history, Chris would be would be an asset to the Society.
