Grounds for election

Barbara Birley (BA, MA) is an experienced small finds specialist and curator. For 22 years, she has worked for the Vindolanda Trust and has written two books, several articles and contributed to numerous excavation reports and other publications. In 2011, she co-curated the redisplay of the award-winning exhibitions at the Vindolanda Museum and the Roman Army Museum and is responsible for the collection achieving Designation status in 2016. She also works in the onsite conservation laboratory looking after the artefacts including precious organic finds like writing tablets and Roman leather. Barbara works to facilitate outside national and international research on the Vindolanda collection, on collaborative projects across the Hadrian’s Wall and Frontier of the Roman Empire World Heritage sites and the development of the Vindolanda and Wall wide formal and informal learning, outreach and engagement programmes.
