Grounds for election

Dr Alexandra Franklin’s contributions to scholarship have greatly increased the understanding of print heritage. By coordinating the Bodleian’s Centre for the Study of the Book, managing the Bodleian Library’s Visiting Fellowship Programme, and directing the Bodleian’s Bibliographical Press, she uses her expertise in book history and historical printing processes to reshape the understanding of print heritage, especially in pre-industrial England. Her model of reconstructing historical workshop methods for printing, and then using those practical insights as research tools, are transformational to research in book history and related fields (including literature and art history). Her research activities and publications allow access to little-understood categories of cultural heritage, most recently eighteenth-century engraved copper plates. She sits on the council of the Oxford Bibliographical Society.
