Grounds for election

Dr Downham has been at the Institute of Irish Studies in Liverpool since 2010, having previously lectured for six years in Aberdeen. She is a leading specialist in Irish-language sources of the Early Middle Ages, with particular research interests in the Viking Period and the breadth of international contacts it brought to the western zone of Britain and Ireland. She has published major monongraphs on 'Viking Kings of Britain and Ireland: The Dynasty of Ivarr' (2007), and 'Medieval Ireland: AD 400-1500' (2017). Her most widely consulted paper is probably that on 'The earliest Viking activity in England?' (English Historical Review 2017) while she is also the author of many more scholarly articles on Scottish and Irish history. She is a regular broadcaster on the subject, and is also currently organizing the (delayed) 2020 Viking Congress, jointly hosted by Bangor and Liverpool.
