Grounds for election
Dr Joseph Koerner is a historian of art, architecture and visual culture of northern Europe, including medieval and early modern German and Netherlandish prints; Romantic painting; the history of self-portraiture; and iconoclasm, especially around the Protestant Reformation. His six books include Caspar David Friedrich and the Subject of Landscape (Jan Mitchell Prize for the History of Art) and The Reformation of the Image (ACE/MERCERS Book Award). He contributes to scholarship by curating exhibitions, including at Harvard, the Austrian National Gallery, and the Kunsthalle Karlsruhe. His major honours include holding the Slade professorship of Fine Art at both Cambridge and Oxford; delivering the Gombrich Lectures at the Warburg Institute and the Mellon Lectures at the National Gallery in Washington; and a Mellon Distinguished Achievement Award. He serves on the leadership committees of antiquarian bodies, including the Isabella Stuart Gardner Museum and the American Academy of Berlin.
