Candidate Details

Candidate Name

Paul Nash

Academic degrees, honours etc.

PhD, Publishing History (Oxford Brookes)

Profession or occupation

Editor, Journal of the Printing Historical Society; librarian, bibliographer, printing historian and historical printer

Grounds for election

Paul Nash is expert in the history of European printing. He preserves print heritage, both materials (through work with national bodies and museums) and practice (with practical reconstructions of workshop practices). His many academic books and articles combine bibliographical and rare practical knowledge, making groundbreaking contributions in both their findings and methodology. In addition to curating and cataloguing rare books – at the Royal Institute of British Architects, the Bodleian and several Oxford colleges – he ran the Bodleian’s Bibliography Room (hand-printing workshop) for ten years. He is now Editor of the Journal of the Printing Historical Society, in which he has long held leadership roles. Through his own work, and by facilitating that of others (e.g. specialised workshops for students, researchers and practitioners), he has greatly expanded the discipline of print research and the use of hands-on recreations of printing techniques as a research tool.
