Grounds for election

Dr. Hedenstierna-Jonson is a senior researcher in the Department of Archaeology and Ancient History at the University of Uppsala in Sweden, and Co-I on the Viking Phenomenon project there, having previously worked at the Swedish National Museum of Antiquities and at Stockholm University. A specialist in the Viking Age, she is a leading authority on warriorhood and military societies, in particular relating to the Rus and their activities in the eastern river trade to Constantinople and beyond. Her monograph ‘The Birka Warrior’ (2006) is a major study of the garrison of the Viking-Age town of Birka, where she has excavated for many years. The editor of several collections, she has also published numerous academic papers on the Vikings in the Baltic and the East. In recent years, she has achieved worldwide recognition as director of the research project on the now-famous ‘female warrior’ burial from Birka.
