Grounds for election

Dr. Ljungkvist is a senior researcher in the Department of Archaeology and Ancient History at the University of Uppsala in Sweden, and Co-I on the Viking Phenomenon project there, having previously worked for several years directing excavations in central Sweden. His research focuses on the Scandinavian Late Iron Age (c.400-1050 CE) with an emphasis on the Vendel Period, a field in which he has established a broad international network. The author of several monographs and numerous scholarly articles, for over two decades he has led excavations at the royal power centre and cult site of Gamla Uppsala, overseeing the exploration of its spectacular monumental halls. Dr Ljungkvist is also a leading authority on the boat burials of the Late Iron Age, and currently directs the research programme for the Valsgärde cemetery, Sweden’s closest parallel to Sutton Hoo.
