Grounds for election
Specialist in 17th-century auricular frames, he has contributed to the appreciation of frames as part of paintings provenance and context, introducing ‘Frame Stories’ information labels at Tate. Co-curated ‘Whistler’s Picture Frames’ (Tate 2009). Recent publications: ‘The Picture Frame: knowing its place’ (Glasgow Univ. 2009), ‘Painting, Frame, Setting’ (Courtauld Institute 2011) and ‘Understanding the Framing of the Turner Bequest’ (British Art Journal 2011) (co-author). Awards: Monument Trust (2010); Jonathan Ruffer Curatorial Research Grant 2012 (Art Fund). Member, City of London Listed-building management guidelines working party and Lecturer in Conservation (City & Guilds London). Chair of the Institute of Conservation Gilding & Decorative Surfaces group and convener and postprints editor of the 2013 ICON conference at the Wallace Collection. Speaking on novelty in materials and techniques in Regency interiors at the 2014 ICON conference, Corpus Christi College, Cambridge.
