Charlotte Behr is Reader in Roman and Early Medieval History in the Department of Humanities, University of Roehampton, where she has taught since 1993. She was awarded her PhD by Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität Münster in 1990 for her thesis Die Beizeichen auf völkerwanderungszeitlichen Goldbrakteaten (Signs and symbols on migration-period gold bracteates) which was published in 1991. She has since published extensively on bracteate iconography, and more widely on the history, art history and archaeology of early medieval Europe with a particular emphasis on imagery and symbolism, and the character and contexts of belief. Her recent publications include an important contribution on New Bracteate Finds from England (Medieval Archaeology 54, 2010) and a major review of the research history of the subject in the magisterial Die Goldbrakteaten der Völkerwanderungszeit – Auswertung und Neufunde (eds Morten Axboe and Klaus Düwel, 2011).
