Richard Green is a highly regarded art historian and retired curator who was responsible for York Art Gallery for 26 years. His particular expertise is British art of the 18th to 20th centuries on which he has published extensively. During his tenure at York he enriched the collections with a remarkable group of acquisitions with works ranging from Poussin to Hockney. He curated numerous acclaimed exhibitions with accompanying scholarly catalogues, notably Turner in Yorkshire (1980) and Masterpieces from Yorkshire Houses (1994). Since retirement he has continued research into William Etty and other 19th century artists and frequently reviews exhibitions and books for the Burlington Magazine and elsewhere. He is active in national and local learned societies and heritage bodies. The York Georgian Society has been transformed under his Chairmanship.
