Grounds for election

Michael Spender is an art historian, trained at the Courtauld Institute of Art. He is BCP Council Museums and Arts Manager, responsible for arts, culture and heritage in Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole Council. His research interests include nineteenth and twentieth century British art and the history and development of industry, trade, ceramics and visual arts in Poole and Poole Harbour. He has worked for Sotheby’s and as director of the Bankside Gallery and the Embroiderers’ Guild at Hampton Court Palace. He has published widely, including monographs on modern British artists, curated exhibitions and published catalogues on J M W Turner, Augustus John, the Royal Watercolour Society collection and British artists in Venice. He is currently preparing a book on Augustus John in the 1920s. He is a heritage advisor to the RNLI and Poole Harbour Commissioners, recent chair of the South West Museum Development Partnership, and a member of the English Civic Museums Network.
