Dr Emma J. Wells is a Lecturer in Ecclesiastical and Architectural History of the Late Medieval and Reformation Era, and a Research Associate in Archaeology at the University of York. She is a recognized expert in the field of medieval ecclesiastical history and archaeology, in both the academic and public sphere. She is known for her research into the history and archaeology of the sensory experience of the late medieval and early modern cathedrals and parish churches, as well as pilgrimage, the cult of saints, public and private devotional practices. Dr Wells is a member of Newcastle Diocesan Advisory Committee; Centre for Parish Church Studies Academic Advisory Board; Guardian for the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings; and executive committee member of the Ecclesiastical History Society. She has also worked extensively as an historical research consultant, gaining broad expertise in the advice and management of many large and small-scale research projects.
