Grounds for election

Dr. Raffield is a senior researcher in the Department of Archaeology and Ancient History at the University of Uppsala in Sweden, and a member of the core staff within the Viking Phenomenon project there. Following university studies at Birmingham and Aberdeen, with doctoral work on the conflict landscapes of the Danelaw, he spent several years as a researcher at Simon Fraser University in Vancouver before moving to Sweden in 2017. A leading expert on the archaeology of Viking-Age slavery and political instability in comparative perspective, in the course of his research Dr Raffield has worked extensively in North America, with fellowships and visiting positions at Pittsburgh and Dartmouth, and research study throughout the South. Alongside numerous academic papers, his monograph ‘The Lives Unseen: Comparative Approaches to Captivity, Forced Migration, and Slavery in Viking-Age Scandinavia’ will appear from Routledge in 2022.
