A Social Anthropologist by training, he has worked on the interface between archaeology and anthropology: holding posts variously as Acting and Assistant Director at the British Institute of Archaeology at Ankara: Lecturer and Senior Lecturer at the Archaeology Department at the University of Wales Lampeter; and Senior Lecturer and Reader in Archaeology and Anthropology at Bristol University. A member of the Catalhoyuk excavation team in the 1990s looking at the reception of the archaeological remains in the present life of the villagers, he later convened the ASA Conference on Archaeology and Anthropology, as well as editing Archaeology, Anthropology and Heritage in the Balkans and Anatolia. He is currently working on the history of anthropology, particularly that period when it began to divide into different sub-fields during the late nineteenth and early twentieth century, and also continues to research amongst the present-day communities of Anatolia and the Balkans.
