Grounds for election

Theresa Singleton is an historical archaeologist and founding figure in the fields of plantation archaeology, the archaeology of the African diaspora, and the comparative study of slave societies in the Americas. She has worked in the field in the American South, particularly with the Gullah-Geechee in coastal Georgia, and in the Caribbean. Professor Singleton’s books include the foundational edited volumes The Archaeology of Slavery and Plantation Life (1985, reprinted 2009) and “I, too, am America:” Archaeological Studies of African-American Life (1999). Her book Slavery Behind the Wall: An Archaeology of a Cuban Coffee Plantation was published in 2015. Professor Singleton has published numerous articles, and combined her academic research with developing museum collections, exhibitions, lectures, workshops, and publications geared toward general audiences. She is currently working on a book focusing on comparing plantation life in the Caribbean and the United States.
