Dr Joshua is a widely distinguished scholar of British folklore and European myth. Her most important contribution to date on the former is _The Romantics and the May Day Tradition_ (2007, repr. 2018), which was shortlisted for the Folklore Society's 2008 Katherine Briggs Award. She is currently working on a book on disability and folklore. Her work on European myth includes her first book, _Pygmalion and Galatea: The History of a Narrative_ (2001). She has an exceptional knowledge of the forms and reception of folklore understood as part of the oral, textual, and visual antiquities of the British Isles in particular.
