Grounds for election
Katherine Harloe is Professor of Classics and Intellectual History at the University of London and Director of the Institute of Classical Studies. Her research concerns history of scholarship, antiquarianism, and reception of Greek and Roman culture in transnational European contexts since 1700. She is author of Winckelmann and the Invention of Antiquity: Debates on Method in the Age of Altertumswissenschaft (Oxford, 2013) and co-editor of Thucydides and the Modern World: Reception, Reinterpretation and Influence from the Renaissance to Today (Cambridge, 2012), Hellenomania (Routledge, 2018), and Winckelmann and Curiosity in the Eighteenth-Century Gentleman’s Library (Oxford, 2018). She has co-curated public exhibitions of historical and antiquarian objects in Reading and Oxford. She is Joint Editor-in-Chief of International Journal of the Classical Tradition and Principal Investigator of ‘Beyond Notability’, an AHRC-funded research project investigating the SAL’s historical archive.
