Grounds for election
James is a leading scholar in post-medieval archaeology with a focus on early English colonial settlement in Ireland and North America during the 16th and 17th centuries. He has published a number of books including An archaeology of Northern Ireland 1600-50 (2017); The Jacobean Plantations in seventeenth-century Offaly: an archaeology of a changing world (2013); and Blarney Castle, an Irish tower house (2011). He also co-edited a number of books including Church and settlement in Ireland (2018) and Plantation Ireland, settlement and material culture (2009). Through his work on a number of societies, including his position as Chair of the Irish Post-Medieval Archaeology Group, he has advocated the conservation and protection of Ireland's archaeological heritage. He has taught medieval and post-medieval archaeology in UCC and Memorial Univsity in Canada. James now works as a senior heritage consultant with AECOM, a leading international consultancy firm, protecting archaeology globally.
