Dr Stephen Bernard is a book historian and literary scholar who focuses on English book publishing in the 1700s, especially archival documentation of the business of bookselling, including legal and financial records. His book The Literary Correspondences of the Tonsons, and his edition of the Letters of Jacob Tonson, made available to scholarship the correspondence of major literary publishers, the writers they published, the book market they supported, and the patrons who funded the emergence of the English literary canon through the Tonson’s output. He has made available key texts for scholarship, including editions of John Dryden’s correspondence and the English and Latin poems of Nicholas Rowe, an early editor of Shakespeare. His research into eighteenth-century English book history has won awards including the Modern Languages Association’s biennial Morton N. Cohen Award for a Distinguished Edition of Letters.
