Grounds for election

With degrees in Classics and Nautical Archaeology, Peter van Alfen, Margaret Thompson Curator of Greek Coins and Chief Curator at the American Numismatic Society, is an international authority on Greek coinage, a field he has helped shape in the 21st century. Working for 20 years at a major international collection, his scholarship extends also from the ancient world to modern historical medals, especially associated with aviation and ships, including the navies of Britain, Europe, and America. As long-time director of the Eric P. Newman Seminar in Numismatics, he has had mentored generations of historians and archaeologists in the literacy and critical use of coinage. He is author/co-author of scores of articles and chapters, editor/co-editor of seven books, and is preparing a monograph on Political Economies of Archaic Coins. Representative recognitions of his distinction include a coveted membership at the Institute for Advanced Study (Princeton) and a Loeb Fellowship.
