Grounds for election

Stephen is an expert on aspects of nineteenth and twentieth century British painting and printmaking. His PhD (University of Kent, 2006) was entitled ‘Landscape and the Christian Soul in Twentieth Century British Painting: Romantic Continuities and Fresh Expressions’. It included explorations of how recent painters, including John Piper and Graham Sutherland, derived both formal and spiritual inspiration from their Nineteenth Century forbears. Stephen’s articles and reviews often appear in Art and Christianity, and in art exhibition catalogues. He was also a specialist contributor to the recently revised Oxford Dictionary of Christian Art and Architecture (OUP 2013). Stephen is regularly called upon by a leading London auction house to identify and advise upon works by John Piper. He has curated two recent exhibitions at Kent University, both focussing on aspects of Twentieth Century British Printmaking.
