Jess Tipper is County Archaeologist for Suffolk, responsible for planning control, conservation and community engagement. He graduated in Archaeology and Anthropology from Cambridge University in 1993 and was awarded his PhD in 2000 for a thesis subsequently published as The Grubenhaus in Anglo-Saxon England (2004). He worked in excavation, field survey and post-excavation analysis in the commercial sector before joining the curatorial team at Suffolk County Council in 2005. He has published on aspects of Anglo-Saxon and East African archaeology, including joint authorship of the monograph report on the important settlement site at Carlton Colville, Suffolk. He recently managed to publication the excavation of the reconstructed Anglo-Saxon building at West Stow destroyed by fire, providing valuable insights into the construction and taphonomy of an important archaeological type. He holds post-graduate certificate and diploma in Public Service Management from Anglia Ruskin University.
